Camp Tekoa's mission is, "Touching Hearts, Changing Lives, Sharing the Light of Christ." Volunteers help us to share our mission every day. Whether it is by assisting a camper with special needs or by clearing brush from a trail, Camp Tekoa relies on the help of our volunteers to make a difference in the lives of thousands of visitors every year.

You can volunteer individually or as a group. All volunteers who work while campers are attending camp must be at least 18 years old, fill out a Volunteer Application, and complete a criminal background check.

Here are a few areas where we can use your help:

Be a Special Friend
Summer Barnabas Camp -July 1-7, 2012 (Residential)
Fall UMAR Barnabas Camp - September 9-12, 2012 (Residential)
Special Needs Day Camp - June 25-29 & July 9-13, 2012 (Daily 8:30-4:30)

This is a great opportunity to provide a helping hand during an awesome week of camp! Volunteers are assigned a camper with developmental disabilities with whom they share in all the activities of camp. Just as their name suggests, Special Friends are week-long companions who provide care and encouragement while expressing Christian love. Campers enjoy activities such as boating, hiking, zipline, arts & crafts, devotions, talent show performances and much more. If you are interested in serving as a special friend at Tekoa please fill out the Volunteer Application . For additional information contact Mike Pruett 828-692-6516.

Volunteer as a Nurse for the week

Each week of the summer, Tekoa relies on a volunteer RN to help care for our campers. This volunteer opportunity is available for one week at a time or multiple weeks. For additional information contact James Johnson 828-692-6516.

Help us with Service Projects

Tekoa relies on volunteer groups and individuals to help with a variety of maintenance, renovations, and grounds upkeep. If you are interested in helping in this area, please contact Camp Tekoa's Maintenance Director, Greg Trollinger at 828-692-6516.

What Is a Polar Plunge?

A crazy, wacky, exhilarating experience designed to raise funds from your family and friends to support Camp Tekoa, simply by jumping in Tekoa's lake in early January!  Anyone is eligible to participate in the event. We hope to have staff, campers, parents, board members, and even clergy participate.

What does the Polar Plunge fund raising support?
The funds you raise from your family and friends will be used to replace the Camp Tekoa diving dock. Our goal is to raise $8,000 for the project. The rebuilding project would include new poles, a larger dock, and two new diving boards. Our hope is to add a slide to the dock as well (depending on funds raised).

All proceeds raised over the goal amount of $8000 will go toward other program improvements.summer_diving_dock

What do I do to get started?
First you need to register by clicking on the registration link above. The registration fee is $10. This will help us keep track of the number of polar plungers and allow us to print your size t-shirt.

If you would like to attend simply to watch the crazy people jump in the cold Tekoa Lake, no registration is necessary.

Does it matter how much money I raise?
Basically, the amount of money you raise determines how deep in the water you must go. Here is the breakdown:
If you raise $50 – You commit to going in the lake up to your knees.
If you raise $100 – You commit to going in the lake up to your waist.
If you raise $200 – You commit to going in the lake up to your neck.
If you raise $250 – You commit to fully immersing your body (head and all!) in the Tekoa Lake.
Please don't feel limited to simply raising $250. If you feel you can raise more, GO FOR IT!

How do I raise funds?
Click on this link and print the Support Form. Use this form to keep track of your supporters. Please be sure to collect funds before the Polar Plunge event on January 7th, 2012.

It is preferred that participants collect supporter's money in the form of checks, but cash is also accepted.

Each supporter should write their own name, donation amount ($), and indicate a mailing address to receive a tax deduction letter on the support form.

Online donations are accepted as well. Your supporters can make donations by clicking here.

Registration Deadline
In order for us to have t-shirts ordered for you, the deadline for registration is December 15th, 2011. However, if you register after December 15th, 2011 then you can still participate, but we cannot guarantee that you will receive a t-shirt in your exact size.
